The Ministry of Health and CARIMER announce partnership to bring more Clinical trials to Jamaica

The Caribbean Institute of Medical Research has established a collaborative with MOH to advance clinical research in Jamaica and in adjacent Caribbean Islands. This collaboration has been advancing through formal and informal channels. It involved several meetings, benchmarking of success stories and was culminated in 2016 in a formal plan.

Carimer has leveraged the resources of MOH to reach out and to assemble a unique research consortium. These initiatives have gained strong support and the forum intended to report findings to the SCD community during the October 2017 Kingston SCD meeting.

The honorable Minster has personally supported this initiative. The Modus project was selected to be a pilot project for the SCD research consortium and for our collaborative with MOH.

 

Collaborative deliverables:

 

  1. Supply participating hospitals with all necessary study support infrastructure such as fridges, freezers, thermometers, etc.

  2. Supply participating hospitals with all necessary software, internet access, computers and other consumables

  3. Allocate financial support to advance the IRB/EC process

  4. Allocate financial support to establish a central research facility for the study storage, central distribution lab. Depot and administrative at the St. Joseph hospital.

  5. Secure that all CRC’s, and other necessary staffing are placed to support clinical studies  

  6. Train staff to support the Modus study and supply any necessary assistance

  7. Report to MOH and other PI’s and sub’I’s details regarding these deliverables.

  8. Support training events, professional meetings and facilitate UWI and MOH exposures to the NIH, EMEA and other leading institutions including the NIH SCD yearly meeting to increase awareness about the capabilities of Jamaican Institutions to conduct research
